A list of resources I personally use to learn Japanese. These are the tools and materials that have helped me progress in my Japanese language journey.

Textbooks and Study Materials

Genki Series: The gold standard for Japanese textbooks. Genki I and II provide a solid foundation in grammar, vocabulary, and conversation skills.

Minna no Nihongo: Another excellent textbook series, particularly good for those who want to focus on practical conversation skills.

Apps and Digital Tools

Anki: Spaced repetition flashcard app. Essential for memorizing vocabulary and kanji. The community decks are incredibly helpful.

WaniKani: Gamified kanji learning system. Makes the daunting task of learning kanji actually enjoyable.

HelloTalk: Language exchange app where you can practice with native Japanese speakers.

Online Resources

Tae Kim’s Guide: Free online grammar guide that explains Japanese grammar in a clear, accessible way.

NHK Easy News: Simplified news articles in Japanese, perfect for reading practice.

YouTube Channels:

  • Japanese Ammo with Misa
  • Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101

Immersion

Japanese Media: Watching anime, dramas, and movies with Japanese subtitles (not English!).

Reading Practice: Starting with children’s books and manga, gradually working up to more complex texts.

Consistency is Key

The most important resource is consistency. Even 15-30 minutes of study per day is better than cramming for hours once a week.

Learning Japanese is a marathon, not a sprint. Take your time and enjoy the journey!
